Employee Assistance Program: Robbi Bocinsky’s Story
Helping our people navigate grief
As part of our Boldly Moving Forward Strategy, we’re focused on intentionally building deep, trusting relationships for our people and nurturing our inclusive culture, including in how we approach wellbeing.
Wellbeing is foundational to everything we’re able to do and accomplish. We continually evaluate our wellbeing programs and benefits to best support our people – and we’re sharing stories of how these programs and tools are helping each of us individually be at our best, so we’re able to do more – together.
In this feature, we connected with Robbi Bocinsky, a human resources supervisor and employee experience officer on our team at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, to hear about her experience using our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to help her team navigate grief.
Featured benefit:
A program providing 24/7 access to confidential, experienced counselors and information services through our Employee Assistance Program (EAP.)
What prompted you to take advantage of this benefit?
Our team lost 12 members over the course of a year due to various tragic circumstances, including COVID-19 – and the impact to our workforce was devastating. After this significant loss, our general manager was determined to help our employees through their grief
How did it help?
The experience with this program was phenomenal. We engaged with the program coordinators directly to figure out how best to support our people during this challenging time. While the logistics of setting this up was challenging, the counselors and program coordinators were extremely flexible and made themselves available to our team around the clock. Within one week, we had nine group sessions scheduled – five onsite and four virtual, in addition to onsite and virtual one-on-one sessions.
The counselors began each session with tips on how to identify the signs of grief and how to work through it. Many employees were willing to share their experiences and how they’d been feeling with the recent losses we experienced.
What did you like most?
This turned out to be the exact support our team needed. Members of our team reached out to let me know that this was very helpful for them during this difficult time – providing them with tools and support to use in the future as well
Are you still using this benefit?
While we aren’t still hosting these sessions, I frequently recommend this program to our employees if they need support or counseling. I also make sure to share information about our EAP benefits with our new hires on day one.
What do you want others to know?
This program provides free, confidential support 24/7 that was very helpful in what was a really difficult time for our team. The virtual sessions, in particular, brought our employees together for the first time in over a year of remote work in an emotionally safe environment.
“While this is a tragic story of loss, I believe it illustrates the many resources we have at our disposal to do what HR does best – helping our people. Mental Health Matters.”
